Unblocking a Zip file

When a Zip file is downloaded from a 3rd party website, it may be necessary to unblock it (this is true on Windows 7 at least). To do this, follow the steps:

  • Locate the Zip file that you just downloaded.
  • Right click and select “Properties”
  • In the Properties window, select the General tab and check if a button labeled Unblock is available.

  • If that is the case, press it to unblock the file’s content.
  • Right click the Zip file again and select Extract all.
    • If this menu is not available on your current operating system, use a Zip application to extract the content.
  • You can now access the content of the file without restrictions.

Not unblocking the file will restrict the permission that the file it contains will get. This may cause unwanted side effects.
